Dr Howard Smith is a Specialist Physician with 25 years specialist
experience in reproductive endocrinology and infertility medicine.
Before completing his medical training at the University of Sydney,
Dr Smith completed a degree in medical science related to the basics
of reproductive function. After receiving his Bachelor of Medicine
and Surgery with honours from the University of Sydney he completed
training as a Specialist Physician in Endocrinology. He spent three
years at the John Curtin School of Medial Research in Canberra to
complete a PhD at the Australian National University in Canberra
before moving to a full time appointment at Westmead Hospital in
1980.
Dr Smith assisted in establishing the Infertility Clinic Service
at Westmead Hospital from which developed the Westmead Fertility
Centre and the first IVF treatment program at Westmead in 1984.
Since then, he has completed further training and gained experience
in many aspects of male and female fertility while working in London.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians,
and a member of the Australian Fertility Society, The Australian
and US Endocrine Societies and the Australian Menopause Society.
Dr Smith has a longstanding teaching and tutoring commitment in
the education of medical and infertility specialists and has published
and referred many research papers. Dr Smith has a special interest
in male infertility and developed a minimally invasive method of
assisting men who are unable to produce sperm. He also has extensive
experience and interest in female fertility, particularly in the
disorder of fertility associated with the polycystic ovarian syndrome.
