Steps towards treatment

If you make the decision to begin treatment through Westmead Fertility Centre, the following outlines the steps you will make in your lead up to treatment.

Before starting treatment at WFC

Step 1: Make an appointment with a WFC specialist

  • see details on our doctors and their contact details
  • you will need a referral from your GP or obstetrician/gynaecologist with both partners’ names included. Take this form to your GP or obstetrician/gynaecologist for completion.
  • attend information seminar (optional)

Step 2: Consultation with WFC specialist

• usually a 1 hour consultation

• both partners need to be present

• bring referral and any test results

•  more than one visit may be required

Step 3: Pre-treatment tests

Your doctor may order some tests before you start IVF treatment. Some of these tests you may have had previously but they may need to be repeated.

These tests may include the following:

Semen analysis

Semen analysis (also called a ‘sperm count’) measures the number, movement (motility), size and shape of the sperm, and the volume of the ejaculation.

Ultrasound scan

An ultrasound can detect a number of abnormalities in ovaries or uterus that can affect your chances of pregnancy.

Blood tests

Both you and your partner will be asked to have blood taken for a hormonal assessment and to screen for hepatitis B, C and HIV. Women will be tested for their immunity to rubella (German measles).

It may take more than one visit to the specialist to complete the necessary tests and investigations.

Step 4: Get ready for treatment

• possible lifestyle changes

• planning to fit treatment into your life
